Cementerio de San Juan is a famous cemetery and historic landmark in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Initially, it was intended as a resting place for famous war veterans from the colonial era. Important figures from the 19th and early 20th century are buried here. The grounds are just outside the famous fortress of El Morro, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The beautifully carved marble statues and figures throughout the cemetery make for something of a sculpture garden. The above painting captures the reverence evident in the survivors of late loved ones who wished to place such an elegantly carved angel upon the grave site. The fortress and its symbolism of warfare strikes counterbalance to the angelic peacefulness of the foreground, encouraging an inner dialogue between the duality of war and peace.
