McArthur-Burney Falls
Original oil painting of the McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The park is within the Cascade Range of Northern California and the Modoc Plateau natural region. The park includes Lake Britton but the park's centerpiece is the 129-foot Burney Falls. Burney falls is not the highest or largest waterfall in California, but it is certainly one of the most inspiring. Burney Creek originates from the springs in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park and eventually flows over the thundering falls. The Cascades were created from volcanic activity millions of years ago and this volcanic region is rich in black, porous volcanic rock, or basalt. The porous basalt retains rainwater and snow melt, forming a large underground reservoir. Eventually, the water emerges as springs at and above Burney Falls, where it flows at 100 million gallons every day. Burney Falls was named after pioneer settler Samuel Burney who lived in the area in the 1850s. The McArthurs were pioneer settlers who arrived in the late 1800s. Descendants were responsible for saving the waterfall and nearby land from development. They bought the property and gave it to the state as a gift in the 1920s. The painting was reproduced in Steve Simon's coffee-table book entitled "California: Through an Artist's Eye." The artwork is also available as archival quality canvas giclée prints in a variety of sizes listed below.
