When the artist painted this scene the lifeguard tower was under construction and not yet painted. The artist chose to represent the tower in red in his painting. In reality, the tower was eventually painted yellow. The crescent-shaped "islet" of Molokini with uninhabited Kaho'olawe is pictured in the background.
