Jedediah Smith Redwoods

Original oil painting of Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park of Northern California. Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park was established in 1929 and comprises of 10,000 acres of predominately old growth coast redwoods park with about 20 miles of hiking trails. The last major free flowing river in California, the Smith River, flows through the park.

Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park is named after the explorer, Jedediah Stong Smith. Smith was the first white man to explore the interior of northern California during a two-year trapping expedition which began in 1826. Discovery of gold along the Sacramento and Trinity Rivers and the ensuing Gold Rush of of the mid-1800s attracted many fortune seekers to northern California, including this area.

In addition to the giant coast redwoods, other trees found in the park include: western hemlock, Sitka spruce, grand and Douglas fir, as well as the less common Port Orford cedar. Beneath the lofty canopy one may also find tanoak, madrone, red alder, big leaf and vine maple, and California bay. Ground cover is dense with a wide range of species and varieties of shrubs, bushes, flowers, ferns, mosses and lichens common to the coast redwood environment.

Wildlife common to Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park includes black bear, deer, coyote, bobcat, mountain lion, skunks, fox, beaver, river otter, squirrels, and chipmunks to name a few. The Smith River is especially known for the king salmon and steelhead trout runs in the fall and winter.

The image was reproduced in Steve Simon's coffee-table book entitled "California: Through an Artist's Eye." The artwork is also available as archival quality canvas giclée prints in a variety of sizes listed below.
