Bodie Ghost Town
Original oil painting of Bodie State Historic Park, popularly known as Bodie Ghost Town. It is east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, California, United States, about 75 miles (120 km) southeast of Lake Tahoe. The ghost town from the late 1800's now stands in a state of "arrested decay" and is maintained by the State of California as a State Historic Park. In 1859, William S. Bodey (the name of the town somehow became Bodie) discovered gold here. The news attracted miners and a town was born, swiftly growing to about 10,000 people by 1880. The history of Bodie is checkered with Wild West lore. Robbers, miners, gunfighters and prostitutes all contributed to its colorful past and their stories seem to seep from the old buildings still fighting the ravages of time. There is reported to have been 65 saloons in town at one point along with gambling halls and opium dens. Visitors to the Park get a real taste for what life must have really been like in the Wild West. The image was reproduced in Steve Simon's coffee-table book entitled "California: Through an Artist's Eye." The artwork is also available as archival quality canvas giclée prints in a variety of sizes listed below.
