Drink art created for this unique collection of artist Steve Simon is a slightly unusual theme for the landscape painter. Simon's usual attention and passion for the landscape is directed instead at the beverages which have in part become part of the places themselves. A Mai Tai drink is framed in this cocktail art still life with various items we have come to associate the Hawaiian Islands with. Sea shells, tropical flowers, pineapple, and, of course, hula girls for a bit of whimsy accent the feeling of Hawaiian aloha. An outdoor setting with a suggestion of the ocean rounds out the composition. The Mai Tai was purportedly invented at the Trader Vic's "Polynesian-style" restaurant in Oakland, California in 1944. "Maita'i" is the Tahitian word for "good." According to the Trader Vic story, Victor J. Bergeron created the cocktail for friends who were visiting from Tahiti. Upon tasting the concoction, one of the Tahitians exclaimed: "Maita'i roa!" or literally "good very!" It has been Mai Tai ever since. There are many Mai Tai recipes. The alleged original formula is provided below: The Original Trader Vic Formula - 1944 * 2 oz of 17-year old J. Wray & Nephew Rum over shaved ice * Add juice from one fresh lime * 1/2 oz Holland DeKuyper Orange Curacao * 1/4 oz Trader Vic's Rock Candy Syrup * 1/2 oz French Garnier Orgeat Syrup * Shake vigorously. * Add a sprig of fresh mint The image is available in a variety of sizes as canvas prints. The whimsical composition makes for an ideal piece of drink art for home, bar, or restaurant or as a souvenir to remind one of fond memories of the Islands.
