Newport Harbor in Newport Beach, California is the largest small craft harbor in the United Sates. Over 9,000 sailboats and powerboats make this four-mile harbor their home. Newport Harbor is historically and culturally the center of Newport Beach. It is also a place of great scenic beauty. Quiet bay beaches are found throughout the harbor while open surf pounds the oceanfront beaches along the Balboa Peninsula and West Newport. Boat slips and moorings are found along much of the shoreline within Newport Harbor. A midchannel anchorage is also available. Luxury homes coexist with old beach cottages throughout the harbor area and its islands. There are seven islands found throughout the harbor. These islands were originally no more than sandbars in the harbor. When the navigable parts of the harbor were dredged, the sandbars where built up with the dredgings. These "dredged up" islands are now home to some of the most expensive residential real estate in the country. Balboa Island is the only island in the harbor with both residential homes and commercial properties. Balboa Island is an extraordinarily charming place. Though it has endured many changes over the decades, its pace has remained decidedly laid back and its atmosphere profoundly uplifting. The island is actually bisected by Grand Canal which in effect creates two islands--Balboa Island and Little Balboa Island. A paved "boardwalk" encircles the perimeter of both islands, offering a wonderful promenade with views of the beaches, bay, and bayfront homes. The vantage point of this painting is just off the Balboa Island shore with the venerable Balboa Pavilion on Balboa Peninsula in the background. The skyline of the Balboa Fun Zone is also visible in the background. The composition suggests a typically idyllic Newport Harbor afternoon under agreeable Newport Beach skies. If you are looking for a Balboa Island print, gift or souvenir, there are a variety of options to choose from above.
