Fine Art Prints and Original Oil Paintings by Artist Steve Simon

Welcome to the Steve Simon online art gallery. Contemporary artist Steve Simon’s art medium of choice is oil on canvas. All of the original art available on this site is created using this medium. Likewise all of the art reproductions and art gifts available have been created from the artist’s original oil paintings.

Simon is largely a self-taught artist. He uses a method of painting known as the Method of the Masters. This process was perfected by artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. This method fundamentally sees painting as an amalgamation of three distinct complexities: shape, value, and hue. In this process, the composition is first drawn on canvas with charcoal, thereby establishing shape and form. Secondly, using the drawing as a guide, a monochromatic underpainting is quickly painted on the canvas to establish the values (light and dark) of the elements in the composition. Lastly, the correct hue is mixed to match the value of a given element as established by the underpainting. The color is then applied over the underpainting. It is a method that places importance in establishing correct relationships and ultimately a more harmonious composition.

Landscape painting is Simon’s specialty. His muse ranges from special places close to home to inspiring destinations he visits. His landscape art includes a broad variety of California landscapes he created during the fifteen years he lived in Southern California as well as other series which include: Oahu, Maui, Cabo San Lucas, and most recently Sedona, Arizona where he currently resides. California art comprises the greatest portion of his portfolio but with over 350 oil paintings completed, Simon has a broad selection of original landscape paintings and fine art prints to choose from across the various places he has painted.

In addition to specific destinations, he has also created collections of original paintings and fine art prints that include: cocktail pictures, surf art, and floral art.

The fine art prints offered on this online gallery are all archival quality canvas giclee prints. Acid free canvas and archival inks are used and the prints are protected with two coats of varnish. The prints are then mounted to hardboard. The paintings are reproduced in sizes up to but not larger than the original. All editions of a particular size are limited to 95 pieces. Only 8x10 inch canvas giclees are offered as open editions.

Simon also enjoys writing poetry to complement his paintings. This combination gives the beholder intimate access to the artist’s thoughts regarding a specific composition. Simon then combines these efforts and presents them in coffee-table books of specific collections. Since these collections portray specific destinations, the books have become popular destination gifts, particularly for tourists and corporate event attendees. On the occasion of corporate groups attending functions in any these destinations, the books make for the ideal corporate gift. In addition to the books, Simon also creates custom corporate gifts from his landscape paintings. Meeting planners are given the opportunity to commission an original landscape painting representative of their group’s destination. The original art is usually won by an attendee at the opening cocktail reception of the event and the remaining attendees receive in-room gifts created from the original art including: framed prints, photo albums, and boxes.
